Insight series 2011
The insight series was something new to me, before i stepped into the third term of 2011 i did not even know that there is actually an insight series. Gradually, I was introduced to the series by my teachers and i was lucky to be given a chance to be a part of the debate teams where i could debate with representative from our schools. Before the debate, we had an insightful talk on our legal system. I have always heard about our rigid system and how people who are charged in singapore are unlikely to get off scott free. From the talk i learnt why this was the case. Actually, for serious cases the Deputy Public Prosecutor(DPP) has to prove that the accused is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. WOW! That is actually very challenging that means that before one can be charged he or she needs to be found guilty from all the evidence and that the charged is supported by a lot of evidence before one will be charged let alone convicted. This shows that actually the reason why accused are normally found guilty in court is not the rigid structure of our country but it is the evidence found before the trials. Even though this is an enriching and insightful talk this was not what i enjoyed most and it is also not what i have the most takeaway from. The debate session was the climax. At first, I took it as a normal current affairs debate or a class debate, however, that was certainly not the case. I was supposed to analyze cinderella and find plausible topics that could come out for the debate, moreover, we were supposed to do it the British Parliamentary Style. But it was the opponents that really made me scared. They were all well-trained debaters from renowned schools and all of them have a wealth of experience. It was like david and the Goliath. Our opponents were Goliath and we were David by we i meant Jun Man and I. We were more inclined towards sports and we had not really met and know each other before thus it was even harder to work out a proper debate without proper training, proper introduction, prior knowledge our the format and the flair. I was very scared as i was the first opposition speaker and i was supposed to make a very good stand for my team however i did not really make that impression on the judge. However everything was a good learning experience as i felt that it was good exposure and it was good fun finding the opposite of me a guy who sits at a table to reason for 2 hours.
